The first week in the fashion month circuit, New York Fashion Week, has come and gone. Fall 2019 began with fluffy “pimp hats” at Tom Ford and ended with Marc Jacobs’ collection of dark, predatory sylphs. While there will be plenty more trends to discover by the time the shows in London, Milan and Paris happen, we’ve already noticed some exciting ones emerge from New York. Here are five trends from New York Fashion Week we’re banking will become big by the time Fall rolls around.
Groove Thing
Anna Sui, Michael Kors and Ulla Johnson all brought us back to a time when the coolest sunglasses aviators and the operative word was ‘groovy’: the 1970s. Think crocheted doily dresses, paisley prints and shearling jackets à la the IKEA monkey. It appears the best way to stay on trend this fall will be a trip to your Grandma (or cool aunt’s) closet.
Rennaissance Faire
If Victorian ruffles have been a hit in past seasons, Fall 2019 took a time machine way, way back to medieval Europe. Stiff boned corsets and puffy sleeves, two styles that are rarely spotted outside the confines of a Renaissance Faire, made a comeback to the runway in a big way. Perhaps inspired by the popularity of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, it appears that ladies-in-waiting are the new style icons to emulate.
Feather, Fur & Fin
The teddy coat of seasons past appears to have mutated into a full-on Muppet look. Gigantic fluffy faux fur coats were spotted at Michael Kors and R13, and Prabal Gurung and Christian Cowan used feathers for volume instead. Considering fashion’s recent embrace of the fur-free movement, it seems we still want to dress like animals just not use them.
Ruching
Ruching is a dressmaking technique that describes when fabric is pleated at a seam to add volume or accentuate a shape, plenty of which could be seen on the Fall 2019 runways. Vaquera puckered fabric into a giant sailboat of a dress, Moon Choi’s gathered knits were super flattering and both Sies Marjan and Carolina Herrera explored the art of draping. We suspect that added twists of fabric will be the best way to make your outfit a little bit extra this Fall.
Freaky Footwear
When it comes to shoes, we say the weirder the better. Eckhaus Latta debuted a surprising collaboration with Uggs, while Anna Sui teamed up with Canadian shoe designer John Fluevog for delightful buckled granny boots. Coach 1941 debuted a high fashion take on gothic creepers, and Proenza Schouler favoured blunt-toed cowboy boots. All were srange and somewhat discomfiting, but that’s what makes them exciting.
