Canadian Superwoman Lilly Singh is Joining the Late Night Boys’ Club

Canadian YouTube Star Lilly Singh is one of the world’s most successful—and most lucrative—YouTube stars. At just 30-years-old, the Scarborough-born, York University-educated entertainer has created a production company (Unicorn Island Productions), become a New York Times bestselling author (”How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life”) and amassed 14 million YouTube subscribers, 8.3 million Instagram followers and 5.7 Twitter fans along the way.

Yesterday, it was announced that Singh is taking on an entirely new role: NBC shared that Singh would host a new late night talk show for the network, replacing Last Call with Carson Daly. The show, called A Little Late With Lilly Singh, will air this September at its scheduled nightly broadcast time of 1:35 AM.

“I truly get to create a show from scratch,” Singh said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she first unveiled the news. “I get to make it inclusive, I get to create comedy segments and interview people and really create something I believe in. [The show will] kind of be like my YouTube channel, just, you know, now I’ll have more than three staff members.”

In speaking to Fallon about the series, she also gave a shoutout to the women in the space who paved the path for her. It’s a space that, sadly, is very, very small. It’s been over 30 years since a woman has hosted a network late-night TV show, with Joan Rivers, who helmed The Late Show for two-years in the ’80s, being the last.

“An Indian-Canadian woman with her own late night show? Now that is a dream come true,” Singh said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to bring it to life on NBC, and I hope my parents consider this to be as exciting as a grandchild.”
