8 Trends We're Letting Go of This Spring, and What We're Wearing Instead

And with a new season just around the corner, there’s a whole host of fresh and exciting spring trends to stimulate our sartorial senses.

This also means it’s time to say sayonara to certain passé trends this season as well (we need to make some room in our wardrobes, after all). From cropped flared jeans to belt bags, today, we’re sharing eight outdated trends that undeniably had their moment not too long ago but are hitting their expiration date in spring 2020.

There was a time not too long ago where the only jeans trend to be seen in were the cropped flared variety (every editor here owned a pair), but this season, the fashion set are opting for longer, full-length hemlines in ’70s-inspired wide-leg, flared, and bootcut silhouettes—thanks mostly to their huge presence on the spring 2020 runways from Celine to Marc Jacobs to Gucci.

Okay, while we’re not getting rid of our denim jackets altogether (it is a handy go-to staple, after all), we are pressing the pause button on them in favor of trending leather shirt jackets instead. This season’s chicest shackets come in a slightly oversize fit in a myriad of hues (colorful leather was a huge spring 2020 runway trend). Whether you wear them buttoned up like a shirt, belted at the waist or undone as a shirt, we guarantee they’ll be your new spring staple.

Off-the-shoulder tops seem a little played out this season. Instead, opt for bold, billowy, and voluminous puff sleeves this spring. It’s a chic option to pair with your jeans.

The fashion set seems to have lime-green fatigue. Instead, they're wearing powerful hot-pink hues in the form of sweaters, dresses, tailored separates and handbags—a color trend we saw pop up in full force on the runways. The hue pairs beautifully with beige and tan.

We’re definitely not opposed to a one-and-done utility jumpsuit, but their moment in the spotlight has been replaced with smart and sophisticated suiting. Three-piece suits and layered tailoring, in particular, reigned supreme on the runways exuding a polished, sharp, refined look. It’s a perfect desk-to-drinks option.

When it comes to handbags this spring, the overarching message is the bigger, the better. So stow away your less roomy belt bags (a trend that has taken a back seat this season) and opt for a larger-than-life carryall instead.

Chunky sneakers have reached their sartorial peak. Now it’s time for modern platforms to have their moment—from ’70s platform boots to sleek flatforms—it’s time to lift up your look with some strong soles.

Fitted knee-length denim shorts were everywhere last summer (most commonly worn with blazers), but for spring, it’s all about more relaxed-fitting long shorts. Think wider-leg tailored styles worn as part of a suit, proving that shorts really can look seriously sophisticated.
