Michelle Obama's Suit on Black-ish Is a Subtle Homage to Her 2021 Inauguration Day Look

Black-ish's eighth and final season started with a bang: Michelle Obama made her highly anticipated guest appearance! The former first lady starred on Tuesday night's episode of the ABC sitcom and, unsurprisingly, served up two chic outfits for the special occasion. Michelle's personal wardrobe stylist, Meredith Koop, told POPSUGAR how she took cues from Black-ish costume designer Michelle Cole and gravitated toward bright colors to mimic those regularly worn by the show's main characters, including Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), Zoey (Yara Shahidi), and Ruby (Jenifer Lewis). She wound up choosing a monochromatic purple suit and cozy colorblock sweater for the Becoming author's two scenes, the former of which was purposefully packed with sentimental meaning.

"I knew this was the one that was going to be the winner."

When Michelle first meets Rainbow and Dre at a When We All Vote fundraiser, she's wearing an all-purple suit custom-made by Sergio Hudson - yes, the same designer responsible for the plum getup she wore to Joe Biden's inauguration. "I thought it would be cool to pay homage to Mrs. O's iconic inauguration look from 2021 with another strong head-to-toe color look by Sergio Hudson," Meredith told POPSUGAR. "I always brainstorm a bunch of options, but I knew this was the one that was going to be the winner, so I just went with it. It was strong, but still had an ease." She added another meaningful touch by accessorizing with a gold medallion necklace by Chicago-based jewelry brand Almasika as a nod to Michelle's birthplace.

Later on in the episode while enjoying dinner at the Johnson house, Michelle dresses down in a cozy JW Anderson sweater Meredith selected for its bold sunset-inspired color palette. She styled it with black Hudson jeans, which have "long inseams to work for her height," and tied together the outfit with twisted gold hoop earrings by Jennifer Fisher, a jeweler she routinely reps. "Ultimately, I wanted her to be super comfortable and feel like herself," Meredith said.

If Michelle's fun sweater and accessories caught your eye on Black-ish, you're in luck: some of the exact pieces she wore are currently still in stock online. Read ahead to shop 'em now and admire the former first lady looking as stylish as ever on screen.

I Tried the Viral One-Leg Jeans, and I Got Plenty of Stares

If you're into fashion and an avid TikTok scroller, you've probably come across the viral and somewhat controversial Coperni one-leg jeans . People who got their hands on them are asking followers how they should style them - and even whether or not they should keep them. Those who are still on a waitlist or are simply curious about the trend are going so far as to DIY the jeans by taking a scissor to one leg of an old pair. I, on the other hand, dared to step into the Romeo Hunte Black One Leg Pant ($232, originally $725), an alternative take on the same silhouette that's even more eye-catching (which, how is that possible?). These jeans were, without a doubt, one of the most polarizing looks I've ever worn - and I've tried some pretty divisive clothing, from Skims butt-enhancing shapewear to the brand's famous push-up nipple bra , and many a sheer naked dress . After wearing the jeans around town to run errands and obviously attracting some attention (st...

Oh, to Be Pedro Pascal's Sparkly Cardigan

Never have we been more envious of an inanimate object than when Pedro Pascal stepped out in a sparkly cardigan this week. As soon as we saw him walking the streets of London wearing the glittery knit, we longed to swap places with it - to be enrobing the heartthrob, catching the attention of random passersby, sparking internet discourse, and ultimately taking responsibility for his style breakout. Pascal has been serving look after look while promoting " The Last of Us " season one and "The Mandalorian" season three this year, working with stylists Julie Ragolia and Fabio Immediato . His latest came on Feb. 23 when he arrived to a radio interview wearing the shiny cardigan in question: a long button-down sweater made of silver foil yarn and created by menswear label 4SDesigns. He layered it over a sheer brown tank top and finished the look with black pants, leather boots, and his usual chunky-framed glasses. Just one day prior, the actor stopped by a photo call...
